Known in the music industry as A.S.E.M, Nana Wiafe Asante-Mensah is a Ghanaian hip hop artist.
The rapper, turned Journalist was born in Ghana’s Central Region, Cape Coast and is the youngest of five boys.
After settling in Accra around the age of 6, he attended St John’s basic school in Achimota.
Music websites believe his love for rapping developed as he used to sneak into older pupil’s quarters and listen to hip hop artists.
He later formed a group named the “Frontliners,” but they soon went their separate ways in the pursuit of their education.
But it was when he met Richie, a singer and producer that would seal his name in the GH Rap scene. A.S.E.M became signed to Richie’s label Lynx Entertainment.
From 2006 to 2008 he enrolled into the Ghana Institute of Journalism from 2006 to 2008 for a diploma in communication studies.
A.S.E.M’s style of music is a combination of the most widely spoken dialect in Ghana Twi, and English.
His inspiration comes from artists such as Reggie Rockstone and Ludacris.
The musician is no stranger to controversy. His very first single Give me Blow was scrapped for the Ghana Music Awards in 2009 after being deemed to be too sexually explicit.
Yet the single became the most bluetoothed song among Ghanaian youths when it was unofficially released.
And his recent single 2010 Fylla, is said to be causing a stir. According to Ghanamusic.com, the song features the latest gossip from the Showbiz world. Never afraid to break the boundaries, he speaks of the 3 Ghanaian actresses involved in the alleged sex tape story.
His most popular songs include: Pigaro, Ohemaa and Lickle Girl.
Ghanaweb says of the rapper: “He basically came from nowhere to take Ghana by storm. He is touted as one of the artists to lead the evolution of Hiplife,”
